Sea Isle Park Disc Golf Course: Fun for Beginners and Casual Players

I recently had the opportunity to play at Sea Isle Park Disc Golf Course in Memphis, Tennessee, and I must say, this course is perfect for beginners, casual players, and even those looking for a quick round of practice. As a seasoned disc golfer, it’s always refreshing to find a course that caters to all skill levels while maintaining beautiful surroundings and a friendly atmosphere.

Sea Isle Park Disc Golf Course

The course layout is great, especially for those who want to hone their mid-range and short drive skills. I found the front nine to be short but quite technical and fun, providing just the right level of challenge without being too intimidating. On the other hand, the back nine mostly consists of open fields – not as thrilling for more advanced players, but still a great opportunity to let loose and enjoy the crisp air and beautiful scenery.

In terms of amenities, I was quite impressed with the Prodigy baskets which heightened the overall playing experience. The tee pads could use some improvement as they’re a bit on the small side. However, the course is well-maintained and in prime condition.

One thing I noticed was the large number of casual players and families enjoying the course. I even saw a group of nearly 10 people playing together! There were also some locals selling swag, which made for a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.

Despite its simplicity, this course has some ace-worthy holes that left me feeling excited and accomplished. I also appreciated that it starts off with short, easier holes for warming up, and finishes with longer holes that allow for that exhilarating “rip-it” feeling.

I must admit, some sections of the course can be pretty dusty, and there is a chance of pedestrians and cars passing by. However, this only adds to the charm of Sea Isle Park as an urban disc golf haven.

The Sea Isle Park Disc Golf Course is a fantastic place for beginners or casual players. Its well-maintained layout and inviting atmosphere make it an ideal spot for spending a sunny afternoon practicing or just having fun with friends and family. I’ll definitely be coming back for more!

Shelby Farms Disc Golf Course Review

I recently had the chance to play at the Shelby Farms Disc Golf Course in Memphis, Tennessee. Nestled within a bustling park with abundant activities, this course offers a great playing experience for both beginners and intermediates.

Shelby Farms Disc Golf Course Hole 8

The layout consists of mostly open fields with trees, and flat ground. The majority of holes stretch over 300 feet, making the game enjoyable without being overly challenging. I appreciate how they’ve mowed a path to the next hole for newer players, ensuring easy navigation.

However, I couldn’t help but notice some areas that need improvement. While the course setup itself is beautiful and obstacle-free, its maintenance leaves something to be desired. In particular, the signage is less than stellar, and many of the tee pads are either non-existent, broken, or in poor condition.

Some tee pads are made of dirt, plywood, or even fake grass—far from ideal when focusing on your throw. I’ve had to throw beside the tee pads at times, as the broken concrete prevents a safe run-up.

To help new players, adding a map at each tee would be a welcome update. This course would also benefit from upgraded tee pads and new baskets for all holes. Improved maintenance would undoubtedly elevate my rating of this course to a 4 out of 5.

Shelby Farms provides a well-rounded disc golf experience, with a few throws over a shallow pond (I admit, I threw one in but managed to retrieve it).

This course is relatively easy to follow and great fun for all levels of players. Possessing a mix of open fields and decently long shots, it offers an enjoyable game without forcing you into technical, wooded situations.

In summary, the Shelby Farms Disc Golf Course is a wonderful setting with ample potential. With some much-needed maintenance and upgrades, this course could become a must-visit destination for disc golf aficionados.

For now, it remains a pleasant spot where beginners and intermediate players can hone their skills and enjoy the game.

My Experience at All Veterans Golfplex Disc Golf Course

The All Veterans Golfplex Disc Golf Course in Memphis, Tennessee truly is an amazing course! It was such a delightful experience navigating a course that has a mixture of short and long shots with elevation.

The course also features 4 holes that require your throw to go across or beside a lake.

I found the course to be well-designed, as it was built over an existing golf course with beautifully kept fairways and park-style trees. There are also many out-of-bounds areas scattered throughout the course, which make it a challenging yet enjoyable play.

Balancing my UDisc map in hand, I scoped out the grass tee pads scattered across the course. It’s a good idea to bring a UDisc map or scorecard along because the course does not have concrete pads.

While playing, I ran into some of the members from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1113, the nonprofit organization that maintains this lovely course.

They offer guidance, counseling, homeless assistance, adaptive sports needs, and equine therapy for veterans and their families.

Donations are essential for their cause, so I was happy to give a $10 donation as a thank you for such a well-maintained course.

The best part for me? The course is open on weekdays! I played on a Thursday, enjoyed challenging shots with few water hazards, and found the course to be well-maintained even after heavy rain. The volunteers who open and close the gate truly make this a special course.

It’s worth noting that the course is open with these hours:

  • Mon-Sat
  • March-May 8am-7pm
  • June-Aug 7am-8pm
  • Sept-Oct 8am-6pm
  • Nov-Feb 9am-5pm

So, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned disc golfer, the All Veterans Golfplex Disc Golf Course in Memphis is a course you will not want to miss.

It’s a perfect combination of a great cause and a well-designed, challenging course. Bring your UDisc map, and don’t forget to make a donation to support the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1113 as well. Enjoy!

How To Throw A Disc Golf Hyzer Flip (Easily)

In the world of disc golf, mastering the hyzer flip can add another level of expertise to your game. Not only can this shot revolutionize your play in the woods, but it also increases your control on tight lines and adds extra distance to your throws, especially for lower-power players.

In this hyzer flip disc golf guide, we’ll break down this popular shot, exploring what it is, when to use it, and how to execute it in three easy steps.

But first..

What is a Hyzer Flip in Disc Golf?

A hyzer flip in disc golf is essentially an understable disc thrown on a hyzer angle. The simplicity of this definition, however, belies the finesse and skill required to execute it correctly.

A video explaining the hyzer flip throw

Thrown with a right-hand backhand (RHBH), a hyzer release counteracts an understable disc’s tendency to turn to the right. Instead, the disc will flip to a flat position (“flip to flat”) and then fly straight. Depending on the disc’s understability, it may even drift to the right towards the end of its flight, commonly known as a “hyzerflip to turn” shot.

The Hyzer Flip is not about throwing hard, but rather about throwing smooth. The goal is to take full advantage of the disc’s understability. To achieve this, three factors need to be perfectly balanced: disc stability, degree of hyzer angle, and arm speed. While this might sound complicated, with practice, it becomes much easier.

Similarities and Differences from Other Throws

Hyzer Flips can be easily confused with other disc golf throws, such as the S Shot or the Flex Shot. However, there’s a distinct difference in the unique release angle and the specific type of disc required for the Hyzer Flip.

Three Essentials for the Hyzer Flip

The three key elements for executing a perfect hyzer flip are the hyzer angle, an understable disc, and arm speed.

Hyzer

Hyzer refers to the release angle for the disc. Throwing the disc on a hyzer angle off the teepad is the first step to mastering the hyzer flip. One needs to ensure a consistent hyzer angle.

If your throws are consistently on anhyzer, it might be a sign that you’re trying to throw discs that are too overstable for your arm speed.

Understable Disc

The second element for a hyzer flip is an understable disc. Understability allows the disc to flip over quickly during flight, which is crucial for the Hyzer Flip.

The trick is to get your most understable disc and throw it on hyzer, starting slow to see whether it will flip to flat. This practice also helps identify the correct combination of angle and power needed for the desired flight.

Most disc golf brands make an understable fairway/distance driver, and there are even some companies like Axiom Discs that are known for producing them.

Arm Speed

Finally, arm speed is vital for executing a Hyzer Flip. It’s not about throwing hard but rather about maintaining a smooth throw.

A disc that is too overstable for your arm speed will hyzer out and never flip up, while a very understable disc thrown with too little hyzer or too much power will flip all the way over and roll.

When to Use a Hyzer Flip

The Hyzer Flip is the go-to shot when you want your disc to fly perfectly straight or when you need to cover a large distance.

Throwing Your Disc Perfectly Straight

The Hyzer Flip is a boon when you need your disc to fly straight, particularly in tight, wooded courses or tunnel shots. The unique flight pattern of the Hyzer Flip allows it to fly straight with just a slight fade at the end.

Covering Large Distances

The Hyzer Flip also excels in covering large distances, especially for lower power players. Instead of trying to force an overstable disc to travel a large distance, you can rely on the understable disc’s natural ability to glide and stay in the air to cover more ground. The slow flip and ride of a Hyzer Flip eats up distance and reduces the disc’s tendency to flip over.

How to Hyzer Flip in 3 Easy Steps

Step 1: Choose the Right Disc

The first step in throwing a Hyzer Flip is choosing the right disc. An understable disc with a high glide rating is ideal.

Disc selection can often be the easiest factor to modify when learning this shot. If a disc isn’t flipping to flat, then opt for a more understable disc.

Step 2: Master the Technique

Perfecting the Hyzer Flip requires a thorough understanding of your throw. You need to hit a consistent hyzer angle, have the right arm speed, and make sure your grip, stance, and throw are all correct. Start slowly, experimenting with different speeds and more or less hyzer. Practice with different footwork can also be beneficial, as a standstill hyzer flip is a powerful tool.

Step 3: Hyzer and Follow Through

Once you’ve got the right disc and the proper technique, it’s time to throw. Release the disc on a hyzer line and follow through. If executed correctly, the disc should flip to flat and fly straight, possibly even drift to the right at the end of its flight.

Putting It All Together..

The Hyzer Flip can open up a new world of shots in your disc golf arsenal. With the right disc, proper technique, and some practice, you can master this throw and significantly enhance your game. Whether you’re hitting tight lines, throwing on wooded courses (like these courses in Memphis), or trying to cover more distance, the Hyzer Flip provides accuracy with less power and a softer landing.
